Abstract
Having belabored this point, we want to be attentive to a close reading of an element of Paradise Lost that has always exercised its critics: its invocation of Galileo. Why is Galileo repeatedly mentioned in connection with the telescope in particular? How does this mention affect, if at all, a global interpretation of the poem itself? Does it have consequences for our understanding of Milton's theory of knowledge? Of action? And so on.
