Abstract
Plagiarism is a contentious issue for universities and has at its roots the proper usage of citation and referencing of sources. How does a teacher preparing English for Academic Purposes (EAP) students in an EFL setting for future study in a western university evaluate student needs in this area, and then provide targeted instruction in referencing and citation to educate about and prevent plagiarism? This paper uses a needs analysis to collect data on student abilities and viewpoints on citation and referencing, identifies key learning objectives from the data, and then presents a practical task informed by those key learning objectives and designed to assess or instruct students in the arts of citation and referencing. The needs analysis process can
be adapted by any instructor preparing students for entry into universities.
