Abstract

In the article English toponyms denoting names of settlements in Great Britain are examined, the essence of concepts "toponym" and "toponymy" is specified, considerable attention is spared to home and foreign scientists’ classifications of toponyms; examples interpretation of toponyms that mark names of British settlements are considered; the importance of differences’ study of toponyms’ written and oral forms, that represent the historical cultural peculiarities of people living on the territory of modern Great Britain is underlined; the linguistic peculiarities of toponyms, that were introduced by different people in certain periods of Great Britain existence history, are described.
