Abstract
Electricity consumption per capita is the index of the living standard of people of a Nation. Electricity is the only form of energy which is easy to produce, easy to transport, easy to use and easy to regulate. So, it is the mostly the terminal form of energy for transmission and distribution. In India demand of Electricity is so far higher than supply. It is because in many fields energy is being wasted in many ways without a notice of Human Beings. If we control that, we can gain large amount of energy and that can be used for other purposes and thus the standard of living and the Economy of Nation would be improved. India today has population of 127 crores out of which 70% live in rural areas. Energy and Development are mutually related to each other. Though energy sector has got top most priority in all the Five Year Plans, the gap between demand and supply of energy is being continuously increasing day by day. Among all energies electric energy is the most widely used and purchased energy. For this reason its use must be confined to a minimum efficient operation. It is estimated that the demand for electricity would grow 8 to 10 percentage per year for next two decades. In this paper the fields where loss of energy could be avoided, challenges faced and remedies are presented.
