Abstract

Introduction: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the efficiency of different intraorifice barriers in providing fracture resistance to endodontically treated roots. Methods: Sixty extracted human mandibular teeth instrumented by crown down technique with Protaper rotary files and obturated Gutta-Percha and AH resin sealer. Coronal 3mm of gutta percha was removed with the aid of Peeso reamers. The specimens were sub grouped into 4 groups of 15 teeth in each group. Mineral Trioxide Aggregate, Resin Modified Glass Ionomer Cement, Composite were used to fill the space. The force necessary to fracture each root was recorded by using Universal Testing Machine. The results were analyzed by one way Analysis of Variance and pairwise by Student's t-test. Results: Composite and Resin Modified Glass Ionomer Cement group showed higher fracture resistance, but the differencewas not statistically significant. Mineral trioxide group showed an increase in fracture resistance of teeth but was statistically less significant when compared to Composite and Resin Modified Glass Ionomer groups. Conclusion: Reinforcement of obturated roots with Composite, Resin Modified Glass Ionomer Cement and Mineral Trioxide Aggregate as intraorifice barriers is a viable choice to reduce the occurrence of post endodontic root fracture.
