Abstract
The power quality is affected due to current harmonics injected by the non-linear loads in to the distribution network. These harmonics would also generate harmonics in the source voltage which in turn hinder the operation of equipment in the distribution network. Some of the power quality disturbances are voltage sag, voltage swell, harmonics, poor power factor etc. These power quality disturbances can be eliminated by using the custom power devices. One of the custom power devices is DSTATCOM. Distributed static compensator has been used for compensation of reactive power, load balancing and harmonic mitigation in the distribution system. The performance of DSTATCOM depends on the control algorithm used for extraction of reference current components. The proposed methodology is based on synchronous reference frame (SRF) theory and instantaneous active and reactive (PQ) Theory. These theories were used for generating a reference current or gate pulses for voltage source converter of DSTATCOM. Performance analysis of DSTATCOM under linear and non-linear loads was carried out in MATLAB environment using Simulink and Sim power systems. By the comparison of the two methodologies, it was found both the theories when used with DSTATCOM were effective to enhance the power quality of distribution.
