Abstract
The article is devoted to the phenomenon of samizdat. Its history is traced, the causes of its occurrence are revealed. It is shown that in the conditions of totalitarianism and the struggle against «dissent», the appearance of «underground» literature was inevitable. The problem of censorship and self-censorship in modern Russia is also touched upon.
