Abstract

Plural noun forms in the Turkish language are created by simply adding “- LAr” to the end of the singular word. It is used in all the modern Turkic languages except the Chuvash language. Plural categories in the modern Turkic languages can be formed with a help of the words, different suffixes or word groups. This article is focused on the comparison of both phonetic and morphological features in terms of the geographic location of two modern Turkic dialects (Turkish as the branch of Southwestern Oghuz Turkic, and Altai Turkic as the branch of Northeastern (Siberian) Turkic) and formation of plural suffixes, their functions and meanings. The article examines the morphemes and semantics which are used to convey the plural meaning in Turkish and Altai Turkic in details. Plural noun forms in Altai Turkic and Turkish have been thoroughly compared. The morphemes or words that give the plural meaning in Turkish and Altai Turkic, the main functions of morphemes that give plural meanings and the ways of forming plural meanings have been discussed as well.
