Abstract
The Internet-of-Things (IoT) is a cutting-edge infrastructure that allows a variety of interactive devices with various sensing, actuation, and computational capacities to link to the Internet, resulting in a multitude of new services in the form of a smart city. Smart city projects are being activated all over the world thanks to appealing IoT services and big data analytics. Cities are being transformed as a result of these programmes, which have improved housing, transit networks, traffic congestion reduction, waste disposal, and human life efficiency. In this article, we propose a taxonomy to include a broad overview of the Internet of Things (IoT) model for smart cities, including interconnected knowledge and communication technology (ICT), network modes, potential opportunities, and major specifications. In addition, an outline of current standardsetting activities is given. Following that, we provide a summary of emerging open source IoT platforms for implementing smart city technologies, as well as many case studies. In addition, we provide a summary of the most recent global synergies and strategies aimed at promoting IoT in the form of smart cities. Finally, we discuss a few challenges in order to suggest study topics for the future.
