Abstract
Alcoholic liver disease is a major cause of alcohol related morbidity and mortality throughout the world. Alcoholic hepatitis is one of its manifestation which shows an approximately 25-30% prevalence. There is no precise treatment guidelines for hepatic ailments in modern science although abstinence to alcohol and high calorie diet and vitamin supplementation can be helpful upto some extent. There are several medicinal plants have been described to be beneficial for hepatic ailments in Ayurveda. Tephrosia purpurea (Linn) pers, an indigenous medicinal plant has a folk reputation among the Indian herbs as a hepato-protective agent. The present study was carried out to evaluate the hepato-protective effect of Tephrosia purpurea (Linn) pers. panchang churna in alcohol induced hepatitis in chronic alcoholics. Oral administration of the panchang churna of T. purpurea 3gm twice a day for 30 days resulted in a significant reduction in all symptoms as well as in Serum Bilirubin, S.G.O.T. and S.G.P.T. Thus, the present study clearly shows that the T. purpurea (Linn) pers. Panchang churna exerts hepato-protective activity.
