Abstract
Ship recycling is the final phase in the life span of a ship. For sustainable development of the ship recycling industry it is essential to correctly assign the roles and responsibilities of the stakeholders. India, being one of the leading ship recycling countries in the world, has accounted for about 27.5% of the global annual ship recycling volume in terms of the total number of ships recycled in 2021. India has acceded to the Hong Kong Convention and has enacted ‘Recycling of Ships Act, 2019' to regulate the recycling of ships in India. This paper proposes a modified strategic guidance plan to carry out sustainable recycling of ships in the yards in India. The proposed plan has been developed based on a system approach with the stakeholders in ship recycling industry in the Indian context as the elements. Required interactions between the stakeholders in the current scenario, after enactment of the ‘Recycling of Ships Act, 2019', have been incorporated in the guidance plan
