Abstract
This paper is on the evaluation of the effect of fractional controller parameters on the time domain and frequency domain performance of a class of linear plants. Three types of linear plants are considered for the evaluation. The effect of conventional PID controller parameters on the plant is analyzed by varying the integral time constant and derivative time constant. The fractional-order controller has two more parameters compared to the conventional controller. The evaluation of performance specifications ensures that proper choice of order of integration and differentiation helps in improving system performance more effectively than the conventional controller. Similarities and differences between classical and fractional PID controller is evaluated using illustrative examples
