Abstract
Operation Ganga was an evacuation operation by the Government of India to evacuate the Indian citizens amidst the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, who had crossed over to neighboring countries. This involved transport assistance from the neighboring countries of Romania, Hungary, Poland, Moldova, Slovakia to reach India. 6 7 Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on 26 February 2022 during which among pressing issues, the safety of students was brought up. 8 The first evacuation flight from Bucharest reached New Delhi with 249 nationals at around 2.55am Indian Standard Time IST on 27 February. 9 Four union ministers namely - Hardeep Singh Puri, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Kiren Rijiju and V.K. Singh were sent the next day to the neighboring countries to assist in prioritizing coordination with local authorities. 10 11 The Indian Air Force and multiple private airlines Air India, IndiGo, Air India Express, SpiceJet, AirAsia India and Go First provided logistical support. 2 Between 24 February and 7 March, the Indian Prime Minister talked to the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin multiple times about the situation, during which among overarching issues, evacuation was conveyed and assistance acknowledged. 12 13 India had about 20,000 Indian nationals in Ukraine, 14 out of which just over 18,000 were students. 15 Approximately 16,000 Indian citizens were present in Ukraine at the moment of commencement of Russian invasion. 16 By 5 March, about 18,000 had crossed the border of Ukraine. 17 18 However emergency evacuation was requested by students still in Ukraine, such as in Sumy. 19 20 21 Following a Leave Kharkiv Immediately embassy advisory on 2 March, 22 the Indian Ministry of Defence released a survival advisory for those still in Ukraine and specifically Kharkiv. 23 24 By 6 March about 16,000 Indians had been flown to India in 76 flights. 25 On 8 March the MEA said that all students in Sumy have been moved facilitated by humanitarian corridors. 26 27 India, as a humanitarian signal, has sent relief to Ukraine including medicines and essentials. 28 29 The Indian government has stated that nationals from neighbouring and developing countries in Ukraine would be provided assistance if sought. 11 30 Dr. Rajesh Kumar Chouhan "Operation Ganga by Prime Minister Narendra Modi" Published in International Journal of Trend in Scientific Research and Development (ijtsrd), ISSN: 2456-6470, Volume-6 | Issue-3 , April 2022, URL: https://www.ijtsrd.com/papers/ijtsrd49611.pdf Paper URL: https://www.ijtsrd.com/humanities-and-the-arts/political-science/49611/operation-ganga-by-prime-minister-narendra-modi/dr-rajesh-kumar-chouhan
