Abstract

This literature review aims to investigate the relationship between violence against women and the mental illnesses associated with it, especially posttraumatic stress disorder related to intimate partner violence. The United Nations issued a report defining violence against women as "any act of gender - based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual, or mental harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or private life." (Menj?var, 2020). There is an increasing focus on women's mental health and welfare. Despite this violence against women is still increasing worldwide. This review discusses the prevalence and impact of violence on women's mental health in women from Arab countries who have been exposed to various types of violence including physical, social, and psychological aggression intimate partner violence and domestic violence being the most common.
