Abstract

Themedicalliteratureprovidessomeinsightintothebenefitsofananticipatoryguidance program. Parents are extremely satisfied with the interaction fostered by thisapproach.Additionally,they enjoy thefunctional approach to educationthatdealswith specific events in their own family. It may be this communication about a vitalinterest that makes the process so successful. Pediatric dentists have seen a dramaticincrease in their market share of childrens dental care, and some of this canbeattributed to their tendency to see children much earlier and thus capture parentsinterest in important dental milestones and the future effects of habits and behaviors.Applyinganticipatoryguidancetodentalpreventiveeducationisanorganizedwayfor all dental providers to enjoy the attention of parents and be more successful inpreventive dentistry. Early dental intervention using an individualized approach suchasanticipatoryguidancemaybethe next frontierin dental caries reduction.
