Abstract
The article is devoted to the linguistic analysis of Polish hydronyms. The origin of the names Vistula, Warta, Notec, San and other large rivers flowing through the territory of Poland is considered. During the study, methods of observation, generalization, correspondence and analogy of hydronyms located in other territories were applied. The systematization of hydronyms was carried out, it was determined that they received a name in the Baltic language environment and subsequently underwent Slavic vocalization. The names of rivers have an etymology related to such concepts as a river, a channel, a stream, a current. The origin of hydronyms is explained by the present tense verb of the 3rd person singular. The proposed article makes it possible to clarify the archaeological and historical aspects of the life of ancient people in Eastern Europe. In particular, the word-formation model of hydronyms and their further vowels indicate the existence of Slavic-speaking inhabitants on the territory of Poland in the first years of our era. Linguistics, together with other historical disciplines, allows you to recreate a picture of the ancient world.
