Abstract
The pace at which urbanization in India has increased during the last 30 years is unparalleled. There are now nine other urban agglomerations in India with more than 2.5 million residents, making a total of ten megacities in the country. Urban sprawl in these developing cities has to be studied, understood, and quantified immediately. This research employs a spatial-temporal analysis of two Landsat satellite pictures taken 20 years apart to identify urban footprints and their evolution in the city of Kanpur in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. To further differentiate these shifts inside the 2 km radius from the city centre, a multi ring buffer analysis is used. The research demonstrates a dramatic increase in suburban development on the city's periphery
