Abstract

While there is a growing body of literature on the topic of destination competitiveness, little systematic work has been done to investigate environmental rivalry from the point of view of management. The management section of the Alberta tourist competition model is used here to establish a connection between competitiveness and environmental management. This model is responsible for introducing a systematic approach to the study of tourism's competition. The method classifies tasks associated with managing a destination as either managerial or marketing in nature. This article takes an ecological approach to the study of these phenomena. To begin, destinations may improve their environmental competitiveness by prudent management of their ecological effects and quality of the environment. Second, certain environmental marketing initiatives can improve the destination's competitiveness. Environmental management is further divided into the following categories: management by codes of conduct, management by self-developed environmental practice, certification of best practices, and management through accreditation programs. Their value for competitiveness and environmental destination management is assessed. (All rights reserved 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd.).
