«I Do Not Want to Leave Rome …» – Scientific Research Trips Abroad of an Archivist Helena Polyachkivna in 1922–1938

Abstract
The aim of the article is to present the scientifi c research trips of an archivist of Lviv Bernardyn Archive Helena Polyachkivna and to characterize the eff ectiveness of her research studies in the leading scientifi c centers of Europe. The research methodology includes the usage of research integrity principles of historical sources and objectivity. Descriptive, linguistic (translation of a source written in Polish) and prosopographic methods, as well as methods of analysis and synthesis, were used. The scientifi c novelty of the article lies in the introduction into scientifi c circulation of the unpublished correspondence of Н. Polyachkivna with the director of the Bernardine Archive in Lviv, Osvald Balzer, discovered in the library of the Ossolinski National Institute in Wroclaw (Poland). The information in these letters makes it possible to study certain aspects of the life, professional and scientifi c biography of the archivist, in particular to fi nd out the personal traits of her character, scientifi c, socio-political and other views, beliefs and tastes, to highlight the main stages and results of her long-term internship abroad in Paris and Rome, to refl ect the course of classes and archival-library searches, to describe everyday life and surroundings, to convey personal emotions and impressions. Prospects for further research is to publish analyzed correspondence, as well as to discover and research personal documents of other Lviv archivists. Conclusions. The scientifi c trips abroad of H. Polyachkivna played an important role in providing her research interests and establishing international cooperation. The geography of these trips covered not only Paris and Rome, but also Brussels, Wroclaw and Zurich. Detailed research work in the local archives and libraries made it possible to process valuable medieval sources and the appearance of numerous scientifi c publications. Thanks to them H. Polyachkivna became one of the best researches of medieval heraldry and spragistics.
