Abstract

The article analyzes the myth of Odysseus. On the basis of the geographical objects mentioned by Homer, the route of Odysseus' journey is established. The events described in the myth take place within the borders of the Aegean, Ionian, Tyrrhenian seas, the Strait of Tunis, and the coast of North Africa. The kingdom of Hades can be localized in the vicinity of the volcano Vesuvius. This article allows you to determine the ideas of the archaic Greeks about the world around them. It has been suggested that the myth reflects an event that took place about 3900 years ago, when Vesuvius erupted. At the same time, volcanic activity was observed in the region, which is also reflected by the mention of the eruption of Mount Etna.
