Abstract

This paper tends to study sacrifices in Khaled Hosseini's third published novel, And The Mountains Echoed. He is an eminent Afghan Origin-American writer. He has written three novels. The Kite Runner (2003), A Thousand Splendid Suns (2007), And The Mountains Echoed (2013). The present study is a humble attempt to describe the sacrifices and explain its action and values in the life of characters in the novel, And The Mountains Echoed. Hosseini skilfully conveys the hardship, pain, love and memory loss in this novel. He also describes how sacrifices changed the value of life. Characters have to suffer a lot. Baba Ayub loses his memory, Saboor becomes isolated, Abdullah has Alzheimer, Masooma wants to die for her sister etc. This paper has its basis in qualitative research because the data are in the form of either quotations or descriptions. The data were collected from both primary and secondary sources. To analyse the data, the researcher has applied the objective approach and explained the sacrifice done by the characters.
