Abstract

Hydrogen (H2), as the most abundant element in the universe, serves as a neutral energy carrier, with environmental implications intricately linked to the methods employed for its production. The viability of hydrogen production depends on the efficiency of its generation, particularly in the field of water electrolysis. As of now, the research field dedicated to H2 generation has encountered challenges that overcome the efficiency barrier, requiring a critical reassessment of its financial sustainability. Given the complex nature of this technology and its overarching environmental impacts, this study undertakes an up-to-date overview of the trends, achievements, and research directions related to H2 generation by electrolysis of alkaline water.
