Abstract

This article attempts to explore the peculiarities of socio-economic development and demographic situation in the post-reform period (1862–1872) in the Mohyliv district of Podillia province. Many historians, politicians, economists, and others have paid attention to this period of time in Ukrainian and world historiography. Most of the works deal with the Peasant Reform of 1861 and its impact on various aspects of life. However, after Ukraine gained independence, there was a need to take a fresh look at certain events, to rethink their significance and consequences. Many studies, especially of the Soviet era, were one-sided and biased. As a result, many provisions need to be clarified and rethought. The study of the Mohyliv district, along with other districts of the Podil province, gives us the opportunity to create a holistic picture of the region's development in the post-reform era. With the help of statistical data, we plan to identify the emergence and development of capitalist relations and to find out their impact on the social and economic life of the population.
