Abstract

Narrative texts are event-based texts that depend on the act of narration, require the unity of person, time, and space, and in which a situation word turns into another situation word with an action word. On the other hand, short stories, which can be evaluated within the narrative type texts, are literary products based on the intensification of the speech act, often consisting of a few words, aiming to create a shock effect on the reader. Ferit Edgü is one of the most important representatives of this genre in Turkish literature. The aim of this study is to subject the meaning production process of Ferit Edgü's short story "Yılan" [The Snake] to an experimental reading/analysis from the concrete discursive level to the narrative level and from there to the deep level, which has an abstract and dynamic structure. In the analysis of the text, semiotic methods that enable this kind of experimental reading/analysis were used. As a result of the analysis, it can be said that the basic meaning of "power" in the deep structure of the text emerges from the opposition between "weak and strong", and that the related story is the reflection of a millennia-old struggle that continues on the diachronic plane.
