Abstract
Grocery stores nowadays are crowded almost every hour of the day resulting in long queues at every billing counter. Our project aims at developing an automated self-billing system that would save the customers’ time and would also be economic enough to be smoothly implemented. We propose the use of RFID technology and an Arduino board for the same. Every product will have an RFID tag (instead of barcodes being used conventionally). When a customer has collected all the items he needs to buy in his shopping bag, he simply places the bag on a self-checkout counter which is equipped with an RFID reader. The reader reads the tags while the Arduino sums up the amount and transmits it to a touch screen display placed adjoining the reader. On confirmation by the customer, the reader sends a sleep command to the RFID tags so that they remain undetected by the RFID reader present at the exit gates. The customer can then pay via his/her credit/debit card.
