Abstract
The paper describes the experience of creating an individual English language learning pro-gram (from level A2 to level B1) using artificial intelligence as part of a project implemented by 2nd-year students doing the Bachelor's program in Linguistics at Udmurt State University. The pro-ject was part of the course “Information Technologies in Linguistics”. The objective was to assess two artificial intelligence systems: ChatGPT and Yandex's AI system. The assessment was made in the “as is” format at the time of the project implementation (May 11‒25, 2023). The following AI system capabilities were tested: creating a weekly study plan for English language learning over three months to move from level A2 to level B1, presenting a new theme, selecting linguistic materi-al to study, simplifying and adapting a text to a specific language level, using AI as a virtual conver-sation partner, writing an informal letter, answering student questions to provide additional explana-tions, and creating tests to assess skill proficiency. ChatGPT successfully handled all the tasks set when testing these functions, unlike the Yandex system, which is based on the Russian language and generally performed less successfully or did not perform well in implementing the tested func-tions. In the concluding part of the project, the students state that AI systems can be used as an ef-fective additional tool for independent English language learning. A retrospective of the student project reviewed in this paper confirms the efficiency of such a form of the learning process.
