Abstract
The relevance of the study is determined by the variability of modern youth slang and the need to timely record new words in it, changes in their meaning and assimilation of the words borrowed from English into the Russian language. It is noted that borrowings from the English language make up a significant part of modern youth slang, and the set of these borrowings, as well as their meanings, changes within one or two years. The impossibility of compiling professional dictionaries that would reflect the current state of the language encourages ordinary people without linguistic education to make lists of new words of youth slang and share them on the Internet. Our study of English borrowings in youth slang is based on the comparison of words obtained as a result of a survey with those ones that are presented in modern online dictionaries. Thus, the presence of a word in a dictionary is considered as an indicator of the degree of assimilation of English borrowings in the Russian language.
The received lexical material was divided into three groups, depending on whether the given lexical unit is present in the dictionaries in exactly the form and meaning indicated by the respondents, whether the meaning or form of the word in the dictionaries differs from that given in the survey, or whether the word is not recorded in online dictionaries and is present only on the pages of “amateurs” or is not presented anywhere at all. Based on this, a conclusion is made about the likelihood of this or that English borrowing entering modern Russian youth slang.
