Abstract

English has been a significant source of new vocabulary in Ukrainian since the end of the 19th century. However, formation of the independent Ukrainian state in 1991 has changed dimensions of this contact significantly. First, Russian has lost its intermediary role and Ukrainian contact with English has become of direct nature lately. Second, the change of social system in Ukraine led to its integration into the global world which caused intensification of English influence upon the local society. Active borrowing process into standard Ukrainian is to be explained by the prestige factor impact since the English language plays a role of the main language of cross-cultural communication nowadays. Analysis of thematic groups of English loan words has revealed certain changes of qualitative and quantitative nature in this group of borrowings. Sport terminology in Ukrainian always contained a large number of English loanwords with a tendency for further expansion. English borrowings have become a significant factor of formation of new terms in the field of economics and art. New IT terminology is based predominantly on English resources. Intensification of the Ukrainian contact with English is indicated by employment of code switching technique, i.e. usage of not adopted elements, which occur in mass media texts as a common speech strategy aimed at new terminology introduction or connotations creation. Besides lexical level, English influence is also visible in wordbuilding patterns where it caused intensification of analytic word building techniques, e.g. compounds (composita and juxtaposita) formation. English resources are also salient is onomastics, e.g. among business names, formation of which heavily relies on English resources, both direct borrowings and structural types of word building.
