Abstract

Potato is cultivated in area about 18,314 million hectare having 4th position under area of productivity. Potato production has played a vital role in increasing vegetable production of the country. Potato occupied 25.6% and share in total vegetable production (2002-03). The contribution of the country in world potato production has increased from 6.4% to 7.8% during last decade with processed product commanding a large share of the potato market. The top eight potato growing states in India are Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Bihar, Punjab, Karnataka, Assam, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. In Madhya Pradesh, potato is grown over an area of 42.8 Thousand hectare with a production of about 562.4 million tones. The productivity of potato is about 1314kg/ha. Jabalpur division is the largest potato producing division in Madhya Pradesh and its cultivation is done mainly in Chhindwara District. Study was conducted in Chhindwara District of (M.P.) in 2009 for the 120 Potato growers. Madhya Pradesh State comprises 50 Districts, Chhindwara District has been selected because of the largest area under Potato Crop in Chhindwara District of (M.P). The total net sown area under Potato crop is 4621.13 hect. in Chhindwara Disreict.
