ROLE OF STUDENTS' AND TEACHERS' ASSOCIATIONS OF GAUHATI UNIVERSITY IN GOVERNANCE

This paper focuses on Students' and Teachers' Associations of Gauhati University and their problems, democratic agitations, demands, fulfillments etc. in the greater interests of students and teachers. Since its establishment in January, 1948, Gauhati University, considered to be the mother university of the entire North East has been serving as a seat of Higher Education for this region till the late 80s. There are lots of problems due to the changing scenario of our country in political and economic affairs and also due to liberalization, globalization and privatization which needs to be addressed. Gauhati University has also borne the brunt of such impacts. An attempt has been made in this paper to find out the demands of the students' and teachers' Associations of Gauhati University and also to see how they are acting as pressure groups for the fulfillment of their just demands. A descriptive survey method has been adopted and data collected by first hand studies by conducting interviews with the office bearers of these associations and also the authorities for the fulfillment of their just demands.
