Feasible management of piggery waste?A critical review

Pigs are underrated in terms of intelligence. They actually are quite, smart if given enough area, pigs do not smell that bad either. China ranks first in pig population (466,016,092 numbers) while our country ranks 12th position with 14,300,000 number of pigs (FAO, 2009). From ancient times compost making has been used as a tool of recycling organic materials back into soil to improve soil structure and fertility of land. This Process has received much attention in the past few years because of pollution concerns and the search of eco-friendly sound methods for the treatment of livestock waste. The pig industry is facing a lot of problems from waste generation as intensive pig production increases and pig business become larger in India especially in north-eastern states. The present paper critically reviews information on the use of compost management, the treatment of piggery waste as a means of addressing the environmental pollution concern. The ways for feasible compost preparation and management, possible factors which are affecting to obtain best quality compost are discussed. Some important recommendations are also presented.
