Abstract
The Global Burden of Disease GBD study is to provide a comprehensive picture of mortality and disability across countries, time, age, and sex. Health loss is quantified from hundreds of diseases, injuries, and risk factors, so that health systems can be improved and disparities eliminated. The 2019 GBD data cum findings have provided new insights on underlying health before the COVID 19 pandemic, and quantifying the challenges against further pandemic threats. Public health systems are said to be failing to stem the effects of risk factors, which accounts for almost half the healthy years of life lost around the world. The paper delves into global burden of disease, challenges and proffers the way forward. Paul A. Adekunte | Matthew N. O. Sadiku | Janet O.
