Abstract

This dissertation explores the impact of domestic abuse DA on children from prenatal to five years and its implications for social work practice. DA is a critical public health issue with significant consequences for women and children. The study begins by examining the prevalence of DA and its effects on pregnant women, the foetus, and children up to five years old. It highlights the increased risk of preterm birth, low birth weight, neurodevelopmental issues, and long term impairments in children exposed to DA.Using a systematic review methodology, the research identifies key themes and findings from literature spanning various databases and regions, including the United Kingdom, Europe, North America, and Asia. The study emphasizes the need for social workers to be aware of the implications of the Domestic Abuse Act 2021, which includes non physical forms of abuse. The research is framed within the concept of significant harm and relationship based social work practice, advocating for a balanced approach between family self sufficiency and child protection. The dissertation underscores the importance of early intervention, multiagency collaboration, and support for mothers experiencing DA. It also addresses the critical role of social workers in assessing parental capacity, providing timely support, and raising awareness about the impact of DA on children. The findings suggest that social workers should adopt a trauma informed approach, build relationships of trust, and engage with perpetrators of DA to ensure the safety and well being of children and families. The dissertation concludes with recommendations for social work practice to effectively address the needs of children affected by DA and their families.
