Abstract

The word obese or fat used to bring on a smile on the lips of the public. But now it brings on a sense of fear because obesity is one of the leading killers of human beings in the world today. The WHO estimates that every second, all over the world 4 times as many people die from the effects of obesity as from smoking. Already an epidemic of obesity is sweeping across the world, with a large number of fat people in the UK, Europe and USA. Now this global alarm has included India in the urban, suburban as well as in the rural .For this we must understand the basic measurement of fatness, which is known as a BMI or body mass index this is calculated by the simple formula weight in KG divided by height in meters the whole squared. The international guidelines indicate that BMI of more than 25 is overweight, BMI greater than 30 is obese and BMI greater than 40 is morbidly obese. This term morbid obesity indicates that the fatness may endanger the life of the patient and kill the subject through heart attacks, strokes, and cancer or lung failure. So what are the problems of being fat? It is not only about people looking at a fat person and laughing. That is actually the smallest of their worries. Obesity is associated with an alarming range of diseases. Firstly the increased weight takes at own on the spinal column, especially the discs, and the knee joint and hip joints. The need for Knee replacement is 10 times higher in obese patient compared to normal subjects. The incidence of DM and HT in such patients is much higher as also blood cholesterol and triglycerides .This unholy combination gives rise to a large number of such patients having heart attacks or strokes ( cardiovascular and cerebrovascular accidents).Indeed obese patients have a high incidence of younger age stokes and fatal myocardial infarctions (heart attacks). Lifestyle â?“ the stress of the modern life began to tell upon all of us. Undoubtedly rushing up and down, having fast food, aerated drinks.
