Abstract

Introduction: Chronic Kidney Disease is prevalent more in the developing countries than in the developed countries. It is increasing at an annual growth rate of 8%. It is a key determinant of the poor outcome of major Non-communicable diseases like Diabetes and Hypertension. Early detection and treatment of CKD can prevent the progression to ESRD. The magnitude of the existing burden of renal failure points to the need for clinical and population based intervention aimed at its prevention. Aim: To compare the eGFR estimated from Cockcroft-Gault and CKD-EPI equations in one heterogeneous cohort against an excellent gold standard method to measure GFR. Methodology: This cross-sectional study was conducted at the Renal Transplant unit at Dept. of Nephrology, Stanley medical college in the two subpopulations comprising the Prospective Kidney donors and the Students in the age group of 18-22 years. Serum creatinine was measured after obtaining consent and was compared against the gold standard method. Results: The Cockcroft-Gault equation is influenced by age, BMI and acts better in younger population. And CKD-EPI gives the best estimation of GFR, although its accuracy is close to that of the Cockcroft-Gault. Key Words: Serum creatinine, eGFR, Cockcroft-Gault, CKD-EPI
