Abstract

The study of the historical experience of teaching literature focuses mainly on the traditions of its teaching in secondary schools. At the same time, the works of Methodists, starting from the 19th century, reflect a steady tendency to consider the problems of teaching literature in gymnasiums and universities, taking into account their interrelationships. The purpose of the article is to reveal the continuity in the teaching of literature in secondary and higher schools in the middle of the 19th century. It was found that in the middle of the 19th century, grammar school literary education received its own goal setting: the teaching of literature in grammar schools is now perceived as a complete system. The acquisition of own tasks of the grammar school course of literary education caused the differentiation of goals in the literature courses of secondary and higher schools. The problem of target differentiation of secondary and higher literary education became the topic of «Instructions for literature teachers in gymnasiums». In it, the goal of the school study of literature was noted humanitarian, socio-cultural adaptation of the graduate; the subject of higher literary education is special scientific knowledge.
