Abstract
The paper provides an insight on the risks and vulnerabilities of the mobile smartphone. It analyzes the technologies available regarding their capacity to protect the user privacy and to combat censorship and surveillance. The effectiveness of the tools and the user awareness about the tool availability in the devices and the network capacity to protect the communication and enable circumvention have been studied among the user communities in countries where such threats are most probable. Common conclusions are drawn and recommendations are provided.
