Abstract

The article examines the semantics of phraseological units with a floral component in the Udmurt and English languages using the material of literary works by Udmurt, English, and American writers. This study represents a novel contribution to the field of comparative phraseology, as phraseological units with a floral component in the Udmurt and English languages have not previously been systematically compared. It was revealed that within the studied corpus of phraseological units in both languages, a group of phraseological units reflecting a person's character stands out. The second group in the Udmurt language consists of phraseological units expressing an attitude toward someone or something. This group ranks third in the English language and, to a greater extent, reveals features of the lifestyle. In second place among English phraseological units is a group of phraseological units characterising a person's appearance. An analysis of the semantics of phraseological units in languages of different systems showed that phraseological units with a floral component exhibit significant similarity in terms of their functioning, as they all primarily characterise a person as a universal phenomenon in Germanic and Finno-Ugric cultures.
