Abstract
Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory condition characterised by the progressive breakdown of periodontal ligament and alveolar bone, primarily due to microbial dysbiosis. Traditional treatments include surgical procedures, mechanical therapies, and pharmacological agents aimed at bacterial reduction or host response modulation. Recent research has focused on the potential benefits of plant polyphenols, particularly those found in cocoa, for periodontal health. Cocoa, rich in phenolic compounds such as flavonoids, is known for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. These properties are essential for maintaining oral tissue homeostasis and potentially mitigating periodontal disease. This review explores the impact of cocoa polyphenols on periodontal health, highlighting their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, which can help reduce bone resorption and maintain tissue integrity.
