GENETIC INFLUENCE AMONG SPECIFIC LEARNING DISABILITY CHILDREN - A MICRO STUDY

Abstract

A specific learning disability results from a difference in the way a person’s brain is wired. It needs the right support and intervention. In India, 13-14 per cent of the primary school children are suffering from one of the specific learning difficulties like dyslexia, dyspraxia and dyscalculia. Reading, Writing and Calculation are required skills that enable human beings to think about, record and communicate ideas concerning elements and the relationships of quality and quantity. It is considered to be essential for efficient and successful living, which occupies an important place in primary school curriculum and everybody uses in daily life. So there is a need to explore the problems of the Specific Learning Disability children’s skill deficit and remedial process. The main aim of the research was to assist the children to overcome their genetic skill deficit through Remedial process. Research made an attempt to understand the problems and skill deficit of Specific Learning Disability children with the help of Descriptive research design. Standardized inventories were administered through interview method for data collection from VII standard students. The researcher purposely selected 5 secondary schools in Coimbatore District, during the academic year 2010-2011. The researcher purposively selected already identified 268 Specific learning disability students. It is inferred that the Specific learning disability children are having problems with basic skills like Reading, writing and Calculation concepts. Remedial teaching with the help of individual educational plan and computer aided programmes made consistent increase in their basic skills to overcome the genetic influence of learning process.
