Abstract

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system has shown remarkable progress, especially in identifying, locating, or tracking people or objects. The last decade has seen new developments in this system, enabling the technology to meet the growing demands of the modern world. On the other hand, reducing the RFID power consumption is very important to obtain an efficient energy. Oftentimes, the focus in the wireless protocol is on long-range and real-time applications. Reducing power consumption is a major challenge in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) when network nodes or “tags” must be battery-powered. ZigBee, a wireless protocol built upon the IEEE 802.15.4 standard, is easier to use and is cheaper than other similar WPAN standards. To this end, RFID tags based on IEEE802.15.4 is designed as a proof of concept in order to maximize RFID tag lifetime. This paper describes possible ZigBee implementation in active RFID deployments, its involvement in the active system and the advantages of ZigBee integration in the active RFID tag. The successful case example proved the network flexibility of ZigBee.
