TEACHING SIMPLE PAST TENSE WITH THE ACTIVITIES TO FOREIGN LEARNERS

Abstract
Turkey’s relations on social, cultural and economic issues with the abroad led to learning Turkish as a foreign language by foreigners. In order to have an efficient Turkish language teaching, linguists have made various researches. There is a need to teach Turkish as a foreign language with the modern language teaching methods and techniques. Although there are studies on teaching Turkish language, teaching Turkish as a foreign language with modern techniques and methods is relatively new when compared to other European languages. Since teaching Turkish is new, there is still various problems to be solved and deficiency. According to the results of various linguistic studies on teaching Turkish language, the biggest problem is on teaching grammar. With the modern language teaching methods and techniques for the linguistic competence, developing grammar skill with the other four language skills is very important. Teaching foreign languages with the games is one of the most entertaining methods. To start learning a foreign language at the early ages shows the importance of teaching foreign languages with the games. But, there is a lack of game materials and methods on teaching Turkish as a foreign language. Because of this reality, this study aims to teach Past Tense with “Time Machine” game. Seven activities have been developed with the sample text, aims of the activities, the reason of the activities, flow chart of activities and evaluation. Word list with the pictures related with the texts have been developed in order to teach word. In this study teaching grammar within the context has been emphasized and various activities have been developed with the visual materials. This study aims to apply student centered teaching and learning with games which is active teaching method.
