Abstract
Objective: The current study investigated the chronic effect of an extract of Bacopa monniera (B. monniera or Brahmi) on cognitive function in intellectual disable (ID) children.Method: The study was a double-blind placebo-controlled in which 286 subjects were randomly divided in to two treatment groups, B. monniera (250 mg) or placebo. Neuropsychological test (intelligence quotient (IQ), memory span, and attention span and on EEG & GSR waves) were conducted at initial-(baseline), 3 and 6 months of post drug administration.Result: The chronic administration of hydro alcoholic extract of B. monniera significantly improved (P< 0.001) the cognition function in both mild to moderate ID children. Our findings suggest that B. monniera may improve the cognitive processes and reduces the mental illness in ID children.
