The essence of competition and competitiveness is considered in the article as a mandatory requirement of the formation of strategic advantages of municipal formation. The levels of competition for territorial social economic system are determined. The main spheres of competition of territories are differentiated. The five approaches to the interpretation of the term “competitiveness of municipal formation” are revealed.
