A Romantic and Revolutionist Poet: Lesya Ukrainka and Turkish Image

Abstract

Lesia Ukrainka is a prolific writer who left a deep scars with her lyric poetry, epic sagas, literary criticisms, tales, plays, translations, journalist activities and sociopolitic papers in Ukraine Literature. Even though Lesia Ukrainka knowing Russian and European literatures closely and knowing about ten languages has a revolutionary idea on social and political issues, She has been under the influence of romanticism in her literary works. Lesia Ukrainka draws attention as an image-maker with her poems writed about Turks as well as with her life, works and ideas. Nationalist Ukrainian Lesya Ukrainka mentions the challenges between Zaporozhian Cossacks and Ottoman janissaries. She canonizes valours of the Cossacks who are the ancestors of the Ukrainians and tells their status under the tutelage of Ottoman administration. With the influence of Panslavist ideas during XIXth century. Although Lesya Ukrainka has a negative perspective against the Turks, she is somewhat temperate by comparison with the Russian writers such as Tyutchev, Dostoevsky and Danilevsky.
