Abstract
In television and movie industry a so-called “blue box” technology is used, when an object in the foreground (e.g. a person) needs to be placed on a different background (e.g. a computer-generated 3D scene). However, it is often not economically justifiable to build a “blue box”, therefore other methods can be used to extract the foreground object and remove or replace background. Task will be to develop a method for automatic background removal (with a calibration procedure) that will work on a live video feed from a webcam. Chroma-key is an application which is used many in video industries, TV programs. In this paper, we present an efficient algorithm for Chroma-key and its FPGA implementation. In the proposed method, we firstly employ K-means to segment input frames in to a tri map including background, foreground, and unknown regions. In the next stage, we utilize comparison of confident neighbourhood pixels to refine unknown region to separate background and foreground regions. In order to apply the proposed algorithm for real-time chroma-key effect, we implement its VLSI architecture on Bite Cyclone III development board. Our design is able to perform Chroma-key process with pleasing quality HD video in real-time.
