Abstract
The article is devoted to the problem of identity of the population of modern Russia, which is important very crucial factor of consolidation of the society. The collapse of the USSR was a prerequisite for the formation of new identity in the countries of the former Soviet Union. The society of the transitional type needs of the adequate national and civic identity of its members. The study shows that obstacles to its formation are: socio-economic differentiation, the cohesion of the population only at the level of local community, low con- solidation potential of the traditional religion ? primary Orthodox. The article is based on the materials of the regional sociological polls and published sources on this issue
