Abstract
Transition Town initiatives recently arose in Britain in response to global environmental problems affecting the city environment and their inhabitants. The contribution briefly explains the basic principles of the Transition Town concept, the ecological way of life in the town supporting the local economy. The main aim of this study is to evaluate the usefulness of this concept in the Czech Republic and to demonstrate the development of initiatives in the Czech cities that are not based primarily on the Transition Town model, but could be included here. The study results show that a number of activities, which we belong to the activities typical for the Transition Initiatives, is developing in the Czech cities for many years, so it is clear that the applicability of the concept is also possible in the Czech towns, if the Transition Initiatives will adapt to local conditions.
