THE EFFECT OF A COMPREHENSIVE SUICIDE PREVENTION PROGRAM ON KNOWLEDGE, ATTITUDES AND AWARENESS TO SUICIDAL ADOLESCENTS

Abstract
Aim The purpose of this study find out the effect of knowledge, attitudes and awareness of suicide prevention programme among youths. Suicide, one of the important causes of death in the younger age group, has a greater socioeconomic impact than other common causes of youths. Therefore, we are in urgent to prevent the suicide among youths by assessing knowledge, attitude, awareness and analysis the data regarding suicide prevention programme. Method Study focused Non experimental descriptive design and fifty youths were selected through convenient sampling technique at Gimhae on August 2014. Data were collected and analyzed by questionnaire and Four point Likert scale with descriptive and inferential statistics, SPSS 19.0 programme. Result Study indicated that females shown better knowledge about youth suicide compared to their male. Attitudes were 44.4% (males) and 38.1% (females). On the basis of research it was hypothesized that young adults would hold reasonable attitudes on youth suicide. Also expected that a gender difference would emerge with females were more positive and accepting attitudes towards youth suicide than males. Awareness indicated that 51.1% (males), 42.0% (females). It was proposed that only a small proportion of young adults would indicate having received suicide education while at high school. Conclusion Study revealed that youths were exposed lack of knowledge, unfavorable attitudes, and lack of awareness. Study suggested that youths need more self-education and suicidal awareness program by health professionals and media in order to improve the knowledge, attitude and awareness regarding suicide prevention programme.
