Abstract

Proper names used in changing and developing cultures vary depending on the differences in time and space. Based on this, in this study the proper names among the tribes of the district of Harput have been reviewed, using the Harput Population Register dated 1834 and numbered 2675. In this context, a total of 4238 muslim male names, of whom 1073 were adults, 1628 children and 1537 elderly, have been determined in the 2036 tribal households in the year 1834. According to the data in the Harput Population Register numbered 2675, names of Arabic origin were used the most in the middle of the 19th century among the tribes in the District of Harput. It has been found that the names of Arabic origin that were preferred were mostly names of the Prophet and people of his household. Traces of old Turkish religious beliefs and traditions are noticed to a great extent in the preference of names of Turkish origin. It has been determined that names of Persian origin, which are few in number, were names relating to heroism and morality. It can be said that the custom of naming the child after the father or the grandfather was commonly current in the middle of the 19th century in Harput and when naming children harmony of names among siblings was also considered.
